7 Clubs Wrestler Placed at the 09 Albemarle Conference Championships

Jaurice Freeman 1st, Shane Brinn 1st, Rick Bateman 1st, Chad Parks 1st, Theo Copenazos 2nd, Justin May 3rd, Cody Bolt 4th.

Manteo High School/OBX Select Wrestling Club had five of it's 7 wrestlers qualify for the 1A/2A East Regional Championships with two others missing it by one match.

  • Freshman; Cody Bolt 145 pounds, who was unable to compete.
  • Junior; Jaurice Freeman 125 pounds with a record of 24-7
  • Sophomore; Chad Parks 152 pounds 24-7
  • Junior; Shane Brinn 135 pounds 30-4
  • Senior; Rick Bateman 140 pounds 34-2

Freeman finished his first Regional Championship with a toughly fought 1-2 record, with both losses going into double over time.

Parks, who was in the toughest weight class stacked with top ranked juniors and seniors, also finished with 1-2 performance losing his final match 2-3 to the number 1 ranked Justin Grady a senior from South Lenior.

Shane Brinn, ranked number 2, showed a great demonstration of skills throughout the tournament.
Brinn pinned Reinhold of Holmes high school in a very quick: 30 seconds.
Decisioned Baldwin of Trask HS 6-0
Decisioned McCauley of Craotan HS 5-4

Brinn's championship finals match started with Brinn getting a great doubled leg takedown on top state ranked Mamour Camara, a senior at Louisburg HS. Brinn kept dominating top control through the first period. During the second he again showed strong top control in the first half of the period when Camara managed the trap Brinn's left leg slipped out the back and caught brinn on his back. Brinn quickly fought to comfortable position not realizing that he was still in a pinnable spot. So brinn was pinned with only 30 seconds left on the clock, something that has never happened in his wrestling career. This loss placed him 2nd in the region and a spot at the state tournament next week.

"Shane was very disappointed with himself and plans on revenging this loss at the state Champions." Coach Bryan Thomas

Rick Bateman, Ranked second, went unscored on in his first two matches. Third round he faced 08 State Placer CC Wright of Craotan HS. In the 1st period neither wrestler was able to obtain a takedown. In the second period Wright escaped for 1 point lead. Early in the 3rd period Bateman was able to reverse his opponent for 2 points. With only 14 seconds left in the match Wright was able to get in position for a 2 point reversal so Bateman locked his hands around Wright's waist to stop the move. This gave Wright one penalty point pushing the match into 1 minute sudden death overtime. Bateman quickly went on the attack driving Wright off the mat with several takedown attempts. After another aggressive push from Bateman, Wright was able to counter with a controversial takedown on the edge of the mat. This gave Bateman his first and only loss of the day. Bateman went on to secure an easy win over Dillon Guss of Rosewood HS defeating him 15-0 in the third period. In Rick's final match his opponent chose to forfeit the match giving him 3rd place giving a middle seed in the State Tournament.

"I am very happy with how my boys performed, but I know that these guys have got a lot more talent within them. And when they are ready to open up it's going to be something to see." Coach Bryan Thomas

Congratulations to our two State Championships placers:

Granby School of Wrestling 08

Our summer camp drive was a success. Five wrestlers chose to go to the Hamden-Sydney Camp with Coach Kyle and Coach Derby. Thanks to all of our supporters from the carwash. We had lots of fun along with a few bumps and bruises and one trip to the hospital. A small casualty of war that will make for a great story someday.

Technique was our focus and we all gained from the experience.

Five other wrestlers went to the Keith Lawrence camp with Coach Bryan. Click here for pictures.

Fun Run

Saturday at the Fun Run was truly a great time. The kids were from all over Dare County. OBX Select was there with mats down giving demonstrations. Everyone was enjoying the cool weather. Coach Kyle was refereeing matches with kids of all ages. Coach Bryan was at a all-day clinic with most of our wrestlers. He had a lot of positive things to say about what they learned and how well the team performed. In all, it was a great weekend for OBX Select and a lot of fun.

2006-2007

What an exciting year we had. The club saw a roster of 30 kids, with ages ranging from 6 to 16. We participated in several tournaments in North Carolina and Virginia, some were on a National Level. The progress that the kids have made was astounding. The club hosted a Tournament for the Rec League at Manteo High School this year. It was a great success, thanks to the parents that volunteered. We also had a car wash at Southern Bank to help raise money for new uniforms. We would like to thank all of our Parents and Sponsors for the support that has been shown.
